Anti-Trafficking Organizations Warn Financial Suspension May Facilitate Forced Labor

A consortium of seventy-four religious, legal, and support organizations across the United States has sounded warnings regarding the withholding of $88m in public money designated for survivors of human trafficking.

Assistance Programs Under Threat

According to a collective communication, the Justice Department has halted monetary aid for over a hundred assistance organizations that help victims break free from exploiters and secure crucial support including safe accommodation, mental health support, and guidance.

"Allowing this money to vanish would allow exploitation to flourish and put survivors’ lives at risk," the document warns. "Many regions will be without their only service provider, stranding victims with nowhere to turn for shelter."

Appeal for Intervention

The group is pressuring lawmakers to encourage the federal government to reinstate the financial support to safeguard countless affected individuals throughout the US.

This appeal is in response to findings that the administration has scaled down efforts to combat forced labor, though representatives deny any withdrawal on anti-trafficking policies.

Effects on Local Areas

  • Several support groups had their resources cut starting the end of last month.
  • Without this funding, victims may lose access to crucial assistance like emergency housing, therapy, and legal aid.
  • Traffickers could act without fear, increasing risks for vulnerable populations.

Government Response

Regarding questions over the withheld money, the DOJ stated that funds allocated by lawmakers would be distributed in due course, but emphasized that past recipients might not get financial support in the future.

Future appropriations will be made aligned with the current administration's objectives, the office said.

Past Endorsement

The letter additionally points out that lawmakers has consistently supported to fund these programs over the last quarter-century, reinforcing the vital necessity of adequately resourcing essential services to safeguard victims and avoid repeat victimization.
