A charity drive is aiming to launch a traditional song from Palestine to the Christmas number one spot. The campaign seeks to send support to people in Gaza while also spotlighting Palestinian cultural expression.
Musician and artist Brian Eno, who performs on the track, stated that the release called 'Lullaby' represents a opportunity to support Palestinians over the Christmas period. He noted the potential for an unlikely festive coup.
“That would be amazing if that occurred, yes,” he stated. “I wouldn't be completely let down if it fails to, festive releases are a unique phenomenon.”
Palestinian singer Nai Barghouti, who sings on the adaptation of a cultural piece called Yamma Mwel El Hawa, explained the track's defiant core message.
“It has a very special place for countless listeners,” Barghouti said. “The message is that I would rather die in dignity than spend my life without freedom. This is the primary message of the song; we desire to exist a respectful existence that we deserve as Palestinians.”
The single was laid down following a large-scale benefit event held in the autumn. Initially planned to be captured during the live event, the rendition was shelved during the concert due to the event running long.
The impressive roster of musicians appearing on Lullaby encompasses a range of well-known figures from the music world. All took part in the benefit event, which reportedly raised a significant sum for humanitarian aid.
Lullaby was brought to life by a trio of producers and composers. The track blends a fusion of the traditional Arabic lyrics with new English lyrics.
The group managing the campaign have clarified that their objective is to raise as much as possible for a charitable pot. These donations will be allocated to initiatives supporting Palestinians through an non-profit partner.
“There is no a rigid aim,” a representative said. “We aim for whatever we can get. Of course, the greater the amount, the better. Every penny goes out to those in need in Gaza.”
The context in the region was noted for its extreme devastation, with a overwhelming percentage of buildings said to be in ruins or severely impacted.
“Against that backdrop, a couple of million doesn’t make a massive dent. But I think the significant factor is first of all spreading knowledge of this plight and proving that another narrative exists.”
The song is set to be released this Friday. Additionally, a video of the benefit event will be made available for streaming on a digital service from mid-December.
