The California governor, a prominent member of the Democratic party, has indicated that he will make a decision about whether to run for president in 2028 after the 2026 congressional elections wrap up.
"Yes, I couldn't be truthful if I denied it," the governor remarked when questioned about seriously considering a campaign for president following the 2026 midterms. "It wouldn't be the truth. And I'm not."
The governor's current term as governor concludes in early 2027, and he is ineligible for re-election. But, he emphasized that any decision is still years away.
"The future will decide," he added.
He has emerged as a prominent opponent of the current federal leadership, using his online platforms and pushing a proposition that would increase Democratic House seats in as a counter to Republican redistricting efforts. This move has made him a target from adversaries.
Donald Trump's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, alleged that the governor does not care about Californians in a recent segment on a major news network. Duffy announced a strategy to withhold federal funds from California and threatened suspending the state's ability to issue trucking licenses.
"I intend to cut a significant sum from the state," he stated, after a recent deadly accident in California involving an undocumented commercial driver that led to loss of life and casualties.
His administration highlighted that the national authorities had reauthorized the individual's authorization repeatedly, which allowed him to obtain a trucking license under national regulations.
The transportation secretary had before stated he was withholding additional funds from the state for ignoring English language requirements for commercial drivers.
"Ex-reality TV personality, now cabinet member, fails to grasp federal law," his administration said in a previous release addressing Duffy's threats. "In the meantime, unlike this clown, we rely on data: The state's CDL holders had a accident mortality rate nearly 40% lower than the U.S. average. The state of Texas – the single state with additional licensed drivers – has a rate almost 50% higher than the state. Data speaks for itself. The Trump administration does."
A recent poll showed that 72% of Democrats and a significant portion of the electorate believed that the governor must consider running for president in the next election cycle. Since Trump took office, public support for the governor has increased to an typical level of 33.5% from previous levels, while his negative ratings has fallen from an average of previous highs to current figures.
Some time ago, the governor commented while traveling several key regions that he had "no clue" about his future for 2028.
He noted his earlier challenges, including being identified as dyslexic at the young age of five.
"The notion that a person who scored 960 on the SAT, who has ongoing difficulties with text, who was typically not at the front – the fact that this is even suggested is, in and of itself, extraordinary," he said. "It's anyone's guess? I am eager to see who steps forward in the next election and who answers the call. And that remains the key point for the voters."
