Examining this Fight for Transgender Rights: An Impactful Documentary Shows the Human Narrative

Trans director Sam Feder's recent film "Increased Examination" provides a compelling dual perspective – both an intimate portrait of a key transgender activist and a pointed analysis of media reporting about trans issues.

Legal Struggle at the Supreme Court

The film follows ACLU lawyer Chase Strangio as he gears up for oral arguments in the landmark Supreme Court case the Skirmetti case. This legal battle occurred in late 2024, with the judiciary ultimately deciding in favor of the state's argument, essentially enabling restrictions on healthcare for transgender youth to remain in place across over twenty US territories.

We produced Heightened Scrutiny in just 16 months, stated Feder during an interview. In comparison, my earlier film Disclosure took me five years, so this was quite rushed. Our intention was to raise conversation so people would understand more about the case.

Personal Narrative Amid Political Struggle

Although Feder offers a extensive critique of how prominent publications have spread transphobic talking points, the film's greatest achievement may be its compelling depiction of Strangio. Typically a cautious lawyer in media settings, Strangio reveals his vulnerability throughout the film.

The tattoo moment is among my most cherished sections in the movie, explained Strangio. Receiving body art is nearly like a meditative experience for me, to be completely aware in my body and to view it as a vessel for things that are meaningful to me.

This approach creates real rapport between Feder and Strangio, enabling the director to accomplish his aim of presenting Strangio as a multifaceted individual and providing a testament for coming generations of how persistently he and fellow activists have fought for trans liberties.

I don't want people to end up in a state of constant discouragement because of what the law is denying us, stated Strangio. I strive to be in a method of using the law to minimize harm, but not to transform it into some kind of pathway for our liberatory potential.
