Whenever a client steps into my office, they usually appear composed and ready to begin their day. However having worked with clients for some time, I'm aware what's really happening resides beneath an orderly facade.
My client reveals that yesterday evening, they served themselves "just one glass" to relax after a long day. One glass turned into two, then a third. That's a habit they've grown used to; a private practice that helps the person "switch off" away from the racing thoughts that overwhelm their consciousness once daily life eventually winds down.
This account mirrors what I'm seeing more and more often during sessions. As a psychotherapist, I have noticed a significant development: a growing number of adults who using drinking to cope with their mental health concerns.
Data reveals that around a significant portion of people who used drinks did so to alleviate tension and nearly one-fifth to handle anxiety.
We exist in a time of known as contemporary stress triggers. Rarely have we been so constantly informed of crisis, disputes and uncertainty. Even when we disconnect our screens, the worries continue of economic pressure, work instability, ecological anxiety and the emotional fatigue that accompanies being so powerless.
For numerous people, a drink toward the conclusion of the day evolves into a quiet retreat. Yet while substances may seem to provide temporary relief, it can exacerbate anxiety with continued use, interrupting sleep, amplifying bodily stress and weakening emotional resilience.
Left unchecked, anxiety can go beyond cause worry. It may affect social bonds, impact sleep and lead to damaging management techniques such as alcohol dependency or compulsive internet use. Timely understanding is essential. That's why it's crucial to pause briefly to reflect on one's own anxiety and recognize the symptoms ahead of they become excessive.
