A trio of officers perished and at least 15 others got wounded in an apparently deliberate gas explosion at a farmhouse in the northern part of Italy.

The explosion occurred as law enforcement and fire personnel entered the house in the vicinity of the city of Verona to carry out an removal notice for two brothers and a sister in their late 50s and mid-60s.

Each of the three deceased individuals belonged to the Carabinieri force.

The blast could be noticed some 5km (3 miles) away and photographs from the area revealed the structure reduced to a heap of debris.

“This is a time for grieving,” said the Minister of the Interior the Interior Minister, who noted that attempts had been made to remove the brother and sister trio in the earlier times.

Background and Motive

The head of the Veneto region, President Zaia, explained the property was under an court order due to unpaid amounts accrued by the three owners.

Mediators had been sent to speak to the family members who had locked themselves into the property. When the police arrived shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities suspect one of the residents caused the explosion.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” regional commander the police commander told the media.

A gas canister had been ignited, and the blast immediately struck our personnel,” he explained.

Petrol bombs were also discovered at the residence, the interior minister said.

Injuries and Destruction

The wounded by the blast comprised eleven more officers of the police force as well as three members of the state police and a fire services member.

According to the prosecuting attorney, the property was in a derelict state and had was without power.

He believed the explosion had happened on a floor above the access point and told reporters it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Just prior to the blast, he revealed personnel had “detected a whistling noise, probably the gas cylinders being opened”.

Neighbor Statements

“We all knew the situation was dire,” neighbors told Italian media, mentioning that the trio had earlier warned to “cause an explosion” rather than leave the house.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”

The Defense Minister Minister Crosetto united with other political leaders in paying tribute to the three officers who had lost their lives in the performance of their duties.
