The direst possible consequences of the global heating for the UK have been detailed by scientists, encompassing a searing 4C rise in temperatures to a 2-metre increase in sea levels. Another scenario foresees a decline of 6C in temperature following the collapse of key Atlantic Ocean currents, which would profoundly upset farming and energy demand.

Credible Extremes, Not Forecasts

  • 4C Temperature Rise: Global temperatures soaring past 4C by 2100 could occur if emissions cuts breaks down or if strong feedback loops including the Amazon rainforest dying unleash its enormous store of carbon. This would lead to severe and lengthy heatwaves and dry spells affecting the UK in summer.
  • Ocean Circulation Failure: A critical sea current, the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (Amoc), is weakening and showing signs of collapse due to global heating. A collapse commencing by 2030 would lead to a 6C cooling in the UK. "Farming would struggle enormously and freshwater availability would be completely altered," said the professor.
