The direst possible consequences of the global heating for the UK have been detailed by scientists, encompassing a searing 4C rise in temperatures to a 2-metre increase in sea levels. Another scenario foresees a decline of 6C in temperature following the collapse of key Atlantic Ocean currents, which would profoundly upset farming and energy demand.
These effects, certain ones are connected to critical climate thresholds, are viewed as low probability but plausible. The team explained that these models plugged a hole in forecasting that had rendered the UK ill-prepared for worst-case results.
"The climate extremes we have mapped should not be seen as certainties, but they are possible," commented Nigel Arnell who oversaw the study. "Britain has been making preparations lacking the tools to plan for worst-case scenarios. We've now provided decision-makers what they need to get ready for climate outcomes they pray never occur, but dare not dismiss."
Another collection of worst-case scenarios details the possible scale of harsh climate between now and the year 2100. These show that temperatures could rocket in some months by up to 6C higher than average, while precipitation could be triple typical amounts.
The likelihood of the worst-case outcomes happening cannot be precisely determined due to unknown factors about what action will be taken to combat climate change and how the climate system will behave. This research was described as similar to defence planning or resilience checks for financial systems.
The worst-case scenarios could be utilized in planning the building of major projects, for example new towns, energy plants and flood defences. Understanding these environmental threats could also hasten the push to slash carbon pollution.
The study created the worst-case scenarios using a combination of observed and historical experience, digital projections and scientific theory. These outcomes do not take into account potential global problems such as the devastation of food supplies and increased conflict.
The research was requested as part of a official risk assessment framework. Previous assessments have warned that too little consideration was being paid to low‐likelihood but high‐impact risks.
An independent advisory body has stated that the UK needs to "adapt to 2C" and assess the risks for severe warming. Earlier government strategies have been labeled being "inadequate" by certain experts.
