New York City Mayor Eric Adams to Endorse Andrew Cuomo in New York City Mayor's Election

NYC's current mayor Eric Adams has announced his intention to endorse Andrew Cuomo in the forthcoming election for mayor, despite months of public tension between the pair of Democrats.

A Surprising Reversal After Recent Criticism

Just last month, the mayor had strongly criticized Cuomo, describing him as a “snake and a untruthful person” and alleging of having “a career of marginalizing Black political contenders.” Yet, in a recent statement, Mayor Adams reversed course, announcing he now intends to support Cuomo in neighborhoods where he maintains strong support.

“It's essential to really wake up the communities of color that have experienced gentrification on how vital this race is,” the mayor stated.

He added, “They have watched their rents increase in terms of gentrification and they have been disregarded in those neighborhoods, and I’m going to go to those neighborhoods and talk directly with organizers and organizations and I’m going to walk with the governor in those neighborhoods and get them involved.”

Election Landscape and Current Developments

The election battle has so far been dominated by the contest between Cuomo and progressive candidate Zohran Mamdani, whose rise in the polls has drawn interest internationally and symbolized aspirations for a revitalized leftwing of the Democrats.

During a recent candidate forum, both the democratic socialist and Republican nominee his conservative opponent declared they would refuse Adams’s endorsement if extended.

Earlier this year, Adams had begun his bid for another term as an independent after facing federal corruption charges which were later thrown out in exchange for his assistance with federal immigration raids across the city.

At an separate media briefing on Thursday, Adams responded to reporters inquiring into the support announcement by saying, “Andrew and I will appear together later today.”

This development came a day after Adams and Cuomo were spotted sitting courtside together at the the NBA team's first game at the famous arena, which took place right after a contentious candidate debate.
