Ex- FBI head James the ex-FBI chief has entered an innocent plea to providing misleading information to congressional representatives and impeding a congressional proceeding.

Mr Comey's attorney entered the plea acting as his counsel in a national courtroom in the Virginia city of Alexandria on mid-week.

Patrick Fitzgerald declared he would seek to have the proceedings thrown out for various causes including that his defendant, a detractor of President Donald Trump, was being selectively prosecuted.

Mr Comey was indicted shortly after Donald Trump pushed his attorney general to take action against him.

Court Developments

At the proceedings on Wednesday, the defense counsel Mr Fitzgerald informed the magistrate they planned to file multiple legal requests to terminate the legal matter before a legal hearing, claiming the prosecution was retaliatory and that a government lawyer was wrongfully appointed to assume control of the legal matter.

The former director's legal matter was initially handled by a Virginia prosecutor, who left his position under pressure from Trump after his investigation into another opponent - New York Attorney General Letitia James - did not succeed to file indictments.

Judicial Environment

The former director seemed in good spirits as he walked into the courtroom on mid-week, speaking with his attorneys and being lighthearted. He was accompanied by his spouse, his wife and offspring his daughter, a government attorney who the Trump administration terminated.

Following the reading to the judge read his constitutional guarantees and the two counts against him in legal proceedings on mid-week, Mr Comey was asked if he understood the charges.

"Yes your honour. Thank you," he informed the proceedings.

Background Context

The former director was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 2013 to 2017 and was fired about a few months into the former president's initial presidency as commander-in-chief. At the time, he was directing an probe into foreign election meddling and whether there were any connections between Russia and the presidential campaign.

During his tenure, James Comey triggered a backlash from Democrats when he declared just days before the national vote that he was examining Democratic candidate Clinton's use of a personal email system. Legal actions against the candidate were not pursued, resulting in criticism from the Republican party as well.

Ongoing Accusations

Prosecutors claim Mr Comey lied to US lawmakers during a congressional hearing in recent years when he was being questioned about both the previous examination as well as the Russia election probe. They allege he misled the Senate by stating he had not permitted an individual at the agency to leak to news outlets information about the government examinations.

Prosecutors also accuse James Comey of "improperly attempting to affect, block and impede" the committee by providing untrue information to it.

Individual Responses

Via social media Mr Comey posted to his online platform after he was accused, he declared he was not guilty and alleged the former president of behaving like a "autocrat".

"Our household have known for a long time that there are costs to challenging Donald Trump," he said. "We will not live on our bended knee."
"I have done nothing wrong," he added. "Therefore proceed with a court case."

The charges against Mr Comey surfaced after Trump posted on social media demanding his chief prosecutor, Ms Bondi, prosecute the former director and others.
