Both supporters of progressive America and Maga advocates were assembled ready to observe their champions do battle. After all, the President had previously called Zohran Mamdani as a “total communist extremist” and “complete eccentric”. The soon-to-be progressive New York city leader had in turn called the conservative US leader a “despot” and “authoritarian”.
Yet observers expecting to observe heated exchange and clothing ripped in the Oval Office were facing a surprise. Trump, seventy-nine, and 34-year-old Mamdani in reality connected very amicably. In fact beautifully, bewilderingly, strangely well. Instead of Batman v Superman, this was animated friendship besties like old pals.
Perhaps the traditional left v right binaries have become obsolete. This was a example of expert appreciating expert – of equals saluting equals.
The President is now on significantly improved terms with Mamdani than with his fellow Republican. The incoming mayor got a warmer welcome from him than from the leaders of his own party – a reality turned upside down.
The buddy movie began with Donald Trump seated behind the presidential desk and Zohran placed to his flank, a statuette of the first president behind him. “We share an important element in agreement – we want this city of the people that we love to do very well,” the chief executive said, speaking about NYC.
He stated further: “In my view you’re going to have optimistically a really great city leader. The more he does – the happier I am. I must note we have no disagreement in allegiance, we agree in anything, and we’re going to be assisting Mamdani to help everyone's goal come true, having a robust and very safe New York.”
The great thud was the noise of presidential journalists’ jaws striking the ground of the White House. That tearing commotion was the sound of GOP advisors destroying their game plan to attack the mayor-elect as the Marxist representative of the Democrats.
This bromance – as surprising as the President exchanging banter with former President Obama at Carter's funeral – proceeded with numerous tactile interaction. Zohran, who will be the initial Islamic city leader of the city and once announced himself “Trump's ultimate opponent”, stated: “Our discussion proved a successful conversation focused on a subject of common admiration and affection, which is NYC, and the imperative to ensure affordability to city residents.”
When journalists commenced posing questions, Donald Trump admitted that Mamdani has opinions that are “out there” but suggested he might “moderate” and “may shock” certain right-wing voters, in fact”.
The two leaders noted that a number of the mayor-elect's constituents had even supported Trump. The left-leaning explained it was because of “cost of living, cost of living, cost of living” – and he looked forward to accomplishing with the chief executive on “economic relief”. Donald Trump acknowledged: “A number of his ideas are indeed the same ideas that I hold.”
Thus when the mayor-elect was questioned about his earlier portrayal of Trump as a tyrant with a fascist program, the mayor artfully pivoted from topics of conflict back to financial matters. Trump then added: “Additionally I’ve been called far more extreme than a despot, so it doesn't bother me.”
Which terms would qualify as an offense currently? Totalitarian? Autocrat? Authoritarian? Führer? When a conservative media journalist questioned if Zohran supported his remarks that Donald Trump is a dictator, the President interjected before the mayor could entirely respond to the point.
“It's fine. You can just say in agreement. Alright?” Donald Trump remarked, patting the mayor-elect gently on the back. “It's less complicated … than elaborating. I don’t mind.”
Cute – but scholars may opine that a American president casually shrugging off the description dictator was not an exemplary event in the history of the country.
Trump stepped in again when a reporter questioned Mamdani why he traveled to Washington in place of taking a train, which consumes fewer fossil fuels. “I will defend you,” the chief executive said, before noting flying was faster and Mamdani was occupied.
Additionally when someone inquired about conservative lawmaker a staunch ally, a dedicated advocate seeking governor of New York state having branded the mayor-elect “an extremist”, the leader commented he rejected that, describing him “quite reasonable”.
It's easy to picture the representative being asked for reaction and exclaiming, “Never!”
