In a recent TV interview, United States lawmaker Bill Cassidy expressed optimism that a bipartisan compromise on the cost of medical care remains within reach, even after the legislature's failure of rival plans last week.
Speaking on a national news program, the GOP senator from Louisiana, who leads the Senate health committee, emphasized the necessity for a "meeting of the minds" between Democrats and Republicans.
His appeal comes after the Senate rejected two distinct one party's and Republican bills designed to curbing healthcare expenses, underscoring the deep disagreement over how to handle impending subsidies that assist millions purchase insurance under the ACA.
"You've got to put cash in the patient's pocket to cover the deductible," Cassidy remarked, contending that the other side must too account for the strain of high deductibles.
The Democratic proposal aimed for a multi-year extension of the enhanced subsidies. In contrast, the plan introduced by Cassidy and a fellow GOP senator focuses on providing government payments of $1,000 into health spending accounts for individuals in specific insurance plans.
The Republican measure received no Democratic support. However, the senator stayed optimistic, suggesting he would be willing to a "temporary renewal" of the premium tax credits in return for action on the issue of high deductibles.
"In my view there's a deal to be had here," Cassidy added. "We need to push for that deal."
His remarks come as some senators express optimism that a form of agreement could emerge after last week's unsuccessful votes. Several GOP members have signaled openness to temporarily continue the enhanced subsidies, with some conditions, noting that approximately 22 million Americans could lose help when the aid expire at the end of the month.
"It is possible to reach an agreement," Cassidy asserted. "I believe we can meet the issues, both about the out of pocket, but also about the premium."
The senator stated he was currently endeavoring to craft a solution that could appeal to both sides. "Let's address our concerns," he remarked.
