Reporters at Hungary's leading publication have shown disbelief after a media group considered aligned with PM Viktor Orbán's party, Fidesz, purchased the tabloid from its previous Swiss owners.
The buyout, which occurs while Hungary gears up for important elections next year, is widely seen as another effort to strengthen government influence on the news outlets.
A Fidesz-friendly media company, Indamedia, declared on Friday it had purchased a collection of Hungarian titles, including Glamour magazine and Blikk, a widely-read daily newspaper whose online platform draws around three million online readers monthly.
Blikk's former chief editor, Ivan Zolt Nagy, stated on Monday that he and another key leader were exiting in "mutual agreement" with the acquiring company.
They were appointed seven months ago to restructure Blikk, "shifting from dramatic coverage but on compelling journalism" and to be "more reader-centered, addressing politics, economic matters, and cultural topics," he commented on social media.
Employees of Blikk admitted feeling taken aback. "I almost had a cardiac episode when I heard the announcement," said one journalist, who wished to be unidentified. "In my view, this is ethically questionable."
Blikk has named a new editor-in-chief, Baláz Kolossváry.
Several media professionals who have decided to stay say they are in a complex circumstance as there are not many other media organizations left to which they could apply.
Over the past 15 years, Orbán has been able to use a sprawling pro-government media landscape to boost his image and public opinion ratings.
Whereas significant press deals have typically occurred either after elections or during a quiet political period, the purchase of Ringier Hungary comes under six months ahead of April's national vote.
Blikk was viewed as a prime target for Orbán and his political organization at a period when polls are indicating that they have a genuine competitor for the premier instance in more than a decade.
The rival candidate, Péter Magyar, whose Tisza party is running on pledges to root out deep-seated corruption, has been outspoken about Orbán's "information apparatus" and the negative impact he claims it has affected Hungary's democratic system.
He has condemned the Ringier Hungary transaction, saying it represents another attempt by Orbán to cement his control over Hungary's press organizations.
While Blikk is a daily publication, famous for its entertainment section and over-the-top headlines, in the recent years it has also run numerous articles on possible misconduct.
"Blikk is by far the most read newspaper in Hungary, a industry frontrunner," said a communications specialist. "Its online site has become surprisingly popular in recent years, becoming the fourth most visited website in Hungary. If partisan content features in such extensively consumed and mainstream outlets, it will have an impact on the public."
For over a ten-year period, Hungary has acted as a example for other "semi-democratic systems" around the world.
Ex-US administrators and their supporters have consistently commended Orbán's Hungary even as it falls in journalistic liberty ratings.
In 2022, Orbán addressed a gathering of US traditionalist groups that the path to power required "owning press organizations."
In 2010, Orbán's regime enacted a law that imposed state authority over the chief communications authority and placed the state broadcaster in the control of allies.
Indamedia is 50% owned by Mikló Vaszily, a government-supporting businessman who is also top executive of a state-aligned TV network.
In a statement, Indamedia's second proprietor and CEO, Gábor Ziegler, commented: "By obtaining of Ringier Hungary, the group is obtaining a successful publication group of equivalent magnitude to Indamedia, with strong market positions and popular products that play a defining role in the Hungarian press environment."
Ringier announced in a release that its decision to sell was "based solely on business strategy factors and our focus on our main internet businesses in Hungary."
