The England midfielder Needs to Cut Out the Nonsense to Secure a Key Role Under Coach Tuchel.

Should Bellingham wants to force his way back into England’s top squad, it would be smart to do away with the dramatics. His reaction after noticing that his number was about to come up following a night of uneven play in Tirana was unacceptable.

"I don’t want to blow it out of proportion but I stick to my words 'conduct is crucial' and respect towards the teammates who come in," Tuchel said. "Substitutions happen and you need to comply as a player."

There is a lesson for Bellingham. There was no call for a tantrum. The captain had recently scored to make England 2-0 up in an inconsequential fixture, there were six minutes left and he, following an inconsistent display, was just shown a yellow for bringing down an opponent. This could scarcely be called a questionable change. Indeed it would have been unwise for the manager to leave Bellingham on considering there was a risk he would make himself ineligible of the first match of the tournament by receiving a second yellow card.

Drawing Attention to Himself

However, the player drew all eyes toward himself. There was no disguising the 22-year-old’s frustration when he clocked that he was going to make way for a teammate. He flung his arms in the air and although he exchanged a handshake after making his way to the bench there was no doubt that the head coach was not impressed.

This represents the hurdle facing Bellingham. He praised his teammate for sending in the ball for the captain to nod home the team's second, but the rest was harmful to his cause. There was no chance arguing was going to alter the decision. Tuchel has talked so much about honoring the team structure and the value of acting professionally.

Facing Examination

Bellingham, not included in the previous squad, has been under scrutiny after returning to the fold in the current camp. Essentially he has been on trial and he has not done himself any favours through his behavior to his substitution as England wrapped up a flawless qualification run by seeing off a spirited effort from the Albanian team.

Tactics and Formation

This implies opinions are divided on how England perform optimally when Bellingham plays. What we saw was not definitive. Tuchel tried new things by the coach at the start. Under him, England have gained the squad a clear system over the past few matches, using a No 6, a box-to-box player, a No 10 and dedicated wide players, but it felt different against Albania. Quansah was made his England debut, Adam Wharton was in the starting lineup internationally and the role of John Stones as an auxiliary midfielder created a passing resemblance to Manchester City’s team that won three trophies.

A Game of Two Halves

His performance was inconsistent. He created an opportunity for his teammate after the break but at times seemed overly eager to shine. He made many poorly executed passes. A pointless clash with an Albania midfielder at the beginning. England were ragged for much of the second half. One Albania chance followed Bellingham gave the ball away. His caution came after he was dispossessed by Broja and brought down Broja.

Substitutes Decide

Ultimately the squad's strength made the difference. Tuchel threw on the Manchester City player, who looked better suited to the spot in which Bellingham operated in the opening period, and Saka. Later Saka whipped in a set-piece for the captain to open the scoring. It was a reminder that corners and free-kicks will play a key role next summer.

Relationship Not Broken

Still, though, the focus was on Bellingham. The excellence of Rashford’s assist for Kane's goal was partly forgotten in the ridiculousness of the substitution incident. At the end, the focus was on Bellingham. The coach approached to his side and guided Bellingham to acknowledge the travelling England fans. The bond between them is not broken. The coach isn't ready to abandon him at this stage. However, whether the coach is prepared to give him centre stage remains in doubt.
