Here's a dare for partners in committed relationships who are fans of scary movies: Get comfortable with your partner and watch Together. This independent film success of 2025 just made its online premiere via Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like typical physical horror, but within Together lies a deep contemplation about our choices in loving our partners.
Together marks the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for over ten years. Married in reality in 2017, the actors contribute a unique chemistry to their roles, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.
The narrative commences when the couple relocate from the metropolis to the country for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the conventions cease. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.
While trekking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the protagonists fall into an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity starts to affect the duo. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.
The entire film is a slow burn horror experience, interspersing elements of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes during something grotesque). The director weaves these elements together seamlessly and delivers them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.
A great deal of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.
In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and far away from his social circle. He dreads the notion of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is amplified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for getting around.
Shanks’ smartest move in this movie refrains from painting Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.
The couple face the sort of issues that are inherent in long-term unions a decade in. Deep down, they continue to care for one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their future together.
While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these anxieties of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to a partner, the symbolism never feels overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal work together in harmony.
Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that single viewers have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. On the other hand, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.
Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could act as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the finale plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply look at your other half and say, “I’d do that for you”?
No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can experience at this very moment.
