The beloved crime series Line of Duty is officially returning for its 7th season, announced by the broadcaster.

A brand new six-episode series written by the show's creator starts production in Northern Ireland in the coming months, according to the production team.

Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the return, saying she was "so excited" about the series' return. Her co-star remarked, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together soon."

The previous series concluded in recent years with a finale that attracted over 17 million audience members. Rumors about a potential return have been circulating for some time, but official word only arrived recently.

New Challenges for AC-12

Series seven will open with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to the announcement.

Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part continue tasked to combat corruption within the law enforcement.

Their work "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, these officers are assigned their "most delicate case so far."

New Character and Complex Case

A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer celebrated for busts of organized crime, faces allegations of misusing his authority to become a offender.

However, this investigation could be a intentional diversion from a larger danger still operating in the shadows, plot details hinted.

Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio commented: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."

"It's an honor to have had countless followers watch the developments of the unit over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be coming back for a new season."

He added: "Corruption in this country was thought to be over while the series was off air, so I've been forced to use my imagination."

Cast Reactions

Martin Compston called appearing in the police drama as "the role of a career".

"Beyond the program's popularity but the colleagues I've worked with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he added.

The Nottingham-born actress stated: "Obviously I'm very happy the show is back! Eager to work with Jed, Martin and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"

Adrian Dunbar commented: "While anticipating the AC-12 return, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together next year."

"Delighted with the news and looking forward to those mercurial twists and turns."

Series Legacy

The drama premiered in 2012 and became one of the most popular television series of the last decade, attracting guest stars such as Lennie James.

Broadcasters has not yet announced when the upcoming series will premiere.

The conclusion of series six brought the extended plot about the search for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a close, and producers said at the time there were no intentions for additional seasons.

Nevertheless, the corporation announced on Tuesday that a new season is now being produced.
