The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated adventure by Critical Role, revealed an exciting introductory sequence. It features our favorite cast of misfits, outcasts, and criminals kicking ass and making their mark, while also hinting at multiple heart-wrenching backstories for key figures including the voice actor's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, the character Fjord.
All in all, the opening looks stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that something was missing in the music selection.
This sequence employs "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar song created by artist Colm McGuinness. This piece from the soundtrack album of that title, the second one put out by the production company's record label their music brand. It's a great sentimental option, and I suspect that fans of the second campaign will appreciate its presence.
But for me, The series' intro fails to capture the hype and energy that was part of the second campaign's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", composed by musician the artist, was an instant classic in my view when it was first revealed in 2015, and it improved further when co-founder the performer wrote words to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in the later year.
Featuring vocals from one actress, another performer, a co-star, as well as the writer, the song was memorable and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series yet, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my phone. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an installment of adventurous fun.
The show's opening with "the new song" fails to hit the same chords for me. It's an impressive piece of music, but from what I know of the group, I feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.
Naturally, Critical Role has stated that the animated show will have a few surprises and variations from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its intro seems to be one of them.
This animated adventure will be available to watch on Prime Video from November 19. For those eager until then, or want a head start to learn about the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are accessible on the audio platform and the video site.
