President Trump has delivered a ultimatum to Hamas, requiring them to accept a proposed settlement for the Gaza region otherwise risk intense actions.
Through a post on his Truth Social platform on the end of the week, Trump announced that an understanding must be achieved by 6 PM EST (10 PM GMT) on the coming Sunday.
The outlined plan includes an prompt halt to hostilities and the return within 72 hours of 20 surviving Israeli detainees held by the group—along with the remnants of individuals presumed to be dead—in return for a large number of detained Palestinians.
Regional negotiators are believed to be pressing the organization for a agreeable response to the plan, but a prominent group representative has indicated that the armed faction is likely to decline it.
"Should this ULTIMATE settlement is not reached, severe retaliation, similar to no one has before experienced, will break out against the group. WE WILL ENSURE STABILITY IN THE AREA BY ANY MEANS," Trump stated in the online post.
Intermediaries have communicated with the chief of Hamas's military wing in Gaza, who has indicated that he disagrees to the recent US halt initiative, according to sources.
It is thought that some of Hamas's political wing in the Gulf state are willing to endorsing the agreement with modifications—but have found their leverage constrained as they are without authority over the detainees detained by the organization.
Another stumbling block for certain in the group is that the agreement requires them to hand over each and every the captives over the initial short window of the halt—surrendering their primary negotiating tool.
There are believed to be 48 detainees presently being held in the Palestinian region by the militant group, only 20 of whom are estimated to be surviving.
The Israeli defense forces initiated a campaign in Gaza in reaction to the Hamas-initiated attack on Israeli territory on a previous date, in which about twelve hundred people were lost their lives and hundreds additional individuals were captured.
At least 66,288 residents have been killed in Israel's operations in Gaza since then, as reported by the territory's group-administered health authority.
